Navigating Perimenopause

Julia Pemberton

Registered Psychologist
Perth, Western Australia

Perimenopause is the transitional period leading up to menopause, often characterized by physical, emotional, and psychological symptoms. During this period, women may experience significant hormonal changes, leading to a range of physical and emotional symptoms. While physical symptoms are well documented, the psychological implications of perimenopause are often overlooked.

Anxiety and Depression
Hormonal changes, sleep disturbances, and stress can contribute to increased anxiety and depression during perimenopause. Women may experience feelings of overwhelm, irritability and mood swings.

Sleep Disturbances
Hot flushes, night sweats, and hormonal fluctuations can disrupt sleep patterns, leading to fatigue, decreased concentration and mood disturbances.

Cognitive Changes
Perimenopause has been linked to cognitive changes. Women may experience difficulties with memory, attention, and processing speed. This is sometimes referred to as ”brain fog”.

Emotional Changes
Women may experience increased emotional sensitivity, reactivity, and intensity during perimenopause. This can lead to feelings of vulnerability, self doubt and relationship stress.

Factors Contributing to Perimenopause Related Stress

Hormonal Fluctuations
Declining estrogen levels can contribute to physical and emotional symptoms.

Lifestyle Factors
Poor sleep habits, inadequate exercise and unhealthy diet can exacerbate symptoms.

Individual Differences
Personality traits, coping styles, and life experiences can influence a woman's response to perimenopause.

Social Support
Lack of social support, relationship stress, and caregiving responsibilities can increase stress and distress.

Seeking support

Perimenopause can be a complex and multifaceted experience, encompassing physical, emotional and psychological symptoms. Your GP can provide a referral for professional help if required to navigate this transitional period with greater ease.
